Jesus Heals a Paralytic at Bethesda

John 5:1-18

In this true story from the life of our Lord, we see the love and the wrath of God perfectly balanced.

Mercy: “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
Justice: “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”

I. In a broken world, paralysis seems normal.

A. The paralytic did not answer “yes” because he given up hope long ago.

B. The pool displayed a false view of God.

II. In compassion, Jesus seeks out hopeless people.

A. Only one person was healed at Bethesda that day.

B. The Pharisees demonstrated a false view of holiness.

III. With authority, Jesus commands us to be well.

A. Jesus ordered the paralytic to get up and walk.

B. Jesus warned the paralytic to stop sinning.

Jesus takes the hard cases.
