The Mission Exists because Jesus left

Acts 1:1-11; Matthew 28:16-20

“The Ascension of Jesus Christ is an important article of the Christian faith, declaring the victory of Jesus and pointing to his present lordship over the events of human history.” ISBE 1:310

I. The Ascension: Jesus is no longer physically here.

A. Christ ascended to a place.

B. Jesus of Nazareth received glory and honor.

C. Christ was seated at the right hand of the Father.

D. Believers have also been seated with Christ. Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 3:1-3

Therefore, the motive for the mission of the church is internal and responsive rather than external and compulsive.

II. The Great Commission exists because Jesus left.

A. The mission of the church is to make disciples – people who follow Jesus.

B. The mission of the church is empowered by the Holy Spirit.

C. The mission of the church is outward.

We may know Jesus and live in the unseen realm by faith. That begins and continues with a personal decision to follow Christ every day.
